Historical information about the airport site: In 1913, construction began on a barracks for the training of airship crews in the Löwental district. In 1915, the "Kriegsluftschiffhafen" (war airship port) was established with an airship hangar; 21 airships, prefabricated at the Riedlepark shipyard, were finally assembled there. The Manzell company Flugzeugbau Friedrichshafen used the area for test flights of military aircraft and built a 150-meter-long runway in 1918. From 1924, Dornier Metallbauten GmbH tested its land-based aircraft here.
