The St. Dionysius Church in Holle dates back to 1277, although a church may have stood in its place a few decades earlier.

The patron saint of the church is the bishop of Paris St. Denis, who towards the end of the 3rd century AD. died as a martyr.

The word "Holle" is the short form of "Hollenderkerken" (= Church of the Dutch).

At that time, rural settlers from Holland cultivated low-lying wetlands.

The church, together with Schönemoor and Süderbrok (Altenesch), was subordinate to the White Office of Bremen Cathedral, i.e. liturgical vestments etc. were purchased from the expenses of these churches.

The pulpit by the Hamburg sculptor Ludwig Münstermann dates from 1637 and was acquired during the service of the Holler pastor Johannes Rosa and his wife Anna von Kaukirchen-Sprange.
