The lake occupies a deep funnel-shaped sinkhole, also shaped by glacial phenomena, and is surrounded by a severe circle of high mountains: the imposing and massive Auto Vallonasso, the rocky castellaccio of Mount Oronaye and the sharp points of the Aiguille d'Oronaye and Monte Villadel.
