During the so-called Creuzburg Werra Gorge, the river between Creuzburg and Treffurt dug into the shell limestone massif there, creating a 150 to 170 m deep canyon-like valley in which tightly curved valley meanders with steep, rocky impact slopes and flatter sliding slopes have formed.
