During the so-called Creuzburg Werra Gorge, the river between Creuzburg and Treffurt dug into the shell limestone massif there, creating a 150 to 170 m deep canyon-like valley in which tightly curved valley meanders with steep, rocky impact slopes and flatter sliding slopes have formed. Especially in the area of the Ebenauer Köpfe and the neighboring Nordmannssteine there were steep edges that are subdivided by gullies and rock pulpits ten to fifteen meters high.
