The medieval Juval Castle is located on a prehistoric cult place on a hill at the entrance of the original Schnals Valley. The castle was built around the year 1278 by Hugo von Montalban and came in 1368 in the possession of the Lords of Starkenberg. In 1540, the castle was acquired by the Sinkmoser family after some changes of ownership and reached its heyday in those years. Centuries later, in 1913, the Dutch colonial ruler William Rowland bought the now dilapidated castle and renovated it professionally.Since 1983 Schloss Juval is the summer residence of mountain climbing legend Reinhold Messner, where he writes books and works on new ideas. The castle is one of six locations of the MMM Messner Mountain Museum in South Tyrol. Here, the South Tyrolean extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner has housed several great art collections.
