The former potash plant Siegfried-Giesen of K + S AG mined potash salts from the southeastern part of the salt dome of Sarstedt. The mine with attached fertilizer factory was located near the municipality Giesen in the district Hildesheim (Lower Saxony). The underground section has been kept open since its closure in 1987 as a reserve plant. K + S now operates reopening planning and approval procedures
