A 69-year-old German citizen has been missing in Pitztal since August 17, 2019. On August 17, 2019, at 11.25 a.m. on the Pitztal Glacier, the man rode the Glacier Express to the mountain station unaccompanied and got off there. He then intended to hike from the mountain station to the Braunschweiger Hütte on foot to meet his wife there. However, the man never arrived at the agreed meeting point.

The German is likely to have hiked above the rift and fell fatally in the process. The body was recovered by mountain rescue and the alpine police and taken away by police helicopter.
