The Krabat Lock is located in a quiet, green setting southwest of Burg (Spreewald), amidst fields, meadows, and canoeing trails – and is a prime example of practical water management in the Spreewald. Here, the locks are still operated by hand: the system is a classic self-service lock and works reliably – provided you follow the instructions carefully. For cyclists on the Gurkenradweg (Gherkin Cycle Path), the Krabat Lock is more than just an eye-catcher. Those who stop here gain insight into a centuries-old system of regulating, using, and maintaining rivers. And if you arrive at the right time, you can watch paddlers operating the locks – or even get involved yourself if you're in a boat. The meadow next to the lock invites you to linger for a while. There are simple seating areas, a tree for shade, and plenty of peace and quiet. Particularly beautiful: the interplay of technology, nature, and movement.
