In the forest area, in a large enclosure, which also includes meadows, live about two dozen fallow deer and sika deer. The animals can be easily observed from the visitor path that surrounds the enclosure. Benches and information boards invite visitors to linger, and food for the animals can be obtained from vending machines.
The free-roaming peacocks are also particularly popular. An insect hotel completes the offerings. As early as 1963, the city of Castrup-Rauxel began creating a large recreation area in the Grutholz forest. Six years later, the game enclosure was built, initially housing only fallow deer, but later also mouflons. For cost reasons, the city wanted to close the enclosure in 2004, but had not anticipated the public protests. A citizens' petition forced the city council to preserve the enclosure, which has since been managed by a citizens' association and arranges animal sponsorships. In the immediate vicinity there is a forest pond with waterfowl and a spacious adventure playground.
