Flood retention basin Mengede / Castrop-Rauxel (HRB Mengede) with observation tower

Although the flood retention basin Mengede / Castrop-Rauxel will once again be a major construction site for connecting the pools - it already looks more like a nature reserve than an actual technical facility. The pools fit well into the landscape, the greenery now offers a magnificent sight and the plant now attracts ornithologists to extensive observation expeditions. The lookout tower is apparently always locked, but at its base with some benches and views over the pools offers a pleasant place to rest, which is now popular with walkers and cyclists.

The flood protection system has developed into a breeding ground for numerous animal and especially bird species and is located in the protected landscape areas LSG Brueninghausen / LSG Emscherniederung between the nature conservation areas NSG Beerenbruch / NSG Mengeder Heide. The municipality of Mengede is already one of the most valuable areas of Dortmund from the point of view of landscape and nature conservation.

On the one hand, this region is still partially a construction site. On the other hand, even for laymen like me, it is already easy to see what diversity there is in the settling flora and fauna.

The Mengede / Castrop-Rauxel flood retention basin will once again become a large construction site to connect the basins - but already looks more like a nature reserve than an actually technical facility. The lookout tower is apparently always closed, but with a few benches at its foot and a view of the pool, it offers a pleasant place to rest, which is now happily accepted by walkers and cyclists.

in the immediate vicinity is the Emschertalhof, there is delicious coffee and cake. Prices and staff are friendly. A little further you will find the rest of the Emscher art and the earpiece with explanations by Herbert Knebel. Very funny,
Next to the Emschertalhof is the Emscherquellhof in Holzwicke and the Emschermündungshof in Dinslaken. I can recommend all

The tower stands out in the landscape. With the open staircase, it is both a work of art and a viewpoint.
Unfortunately, the tower is no longer accessible.
However, the surrounding landscape also works from the ground.

Relaxed route with the possibility to enjoy a bike at the snack bar directly on the Emscher cycle path. Not far from the observation tower.
