The mining area around Clausnitz goes back to 1460. From 1860 to 1866 the St. Michaelis tunnel was excavated in order to reach the King Solomon's pit and drain the water from there. Mainly copper ore was mined. 2001 - 2004 a 400m long section of the tunnel was renovated by the Freiberg mountain security and made accessible to the public again.
