Around 700 hp steam locomotives drive to the highest station of all German adhesion narrow-gauge railways (1,125 meters). Goods trains ran on the Brocken Railway until 1987, transporting coal, oil and building materials up the mountain for the border troops of the GDR and soldiers of the Soviet Union who were stationed there; put back into operation in July 1992, since then used for tourism.
