The picturesque Olefsee, a drinking water dam with a capacity of 20 million cbm, lies in the midst of beautiful forests. A circular route of 13.5 km runs around the Olefsee, which offers hikers or cyclists an inexhaustible source of relaxation. The dam wall of the drinking water dam in pillar cell construction is still unique in Germany.

As we hiked, from the car park below, left into the mountains to the end of the lake, it was a very nice tour. The way back on the lake was unfortunately not so tingling, since everything only asphalt road. Since you should look for another route.

The Oleftalsperre was built between 1954 and 1959 by the Rurtalsperren - Gesellschaft GmbH Aachen. It serves to protect the surrounding communities from flooding and to provide drinking water through the Oleftal waterworks in Hellenthal. The capacity of the Oleftalsperre is approximately 20 million m³.
The dam belongs to the Eifel-Rur water association. Due to its proximity to the Belgian border, its western half is already in the security area of the Elsenborn military training area in the Belgian municipality of Bütgenbach. (Source: Wikipedia)
