The Rüstersiel Siel was laid as early as 1607 and after a short time the Rüstersiel harbor was one of the central trading ports for tea, candy, textiles, porcelain and building materials. During the continental blockade around 1806, it experienced its heyday with 1,345 arriving and 1,293 sailing ships - the thriving steamboat industry was Rüstersiel's undoing, and the port lost its attractiveness. In 1911 Rüstersiel was declared a North Sea resort: "If your goal is relaxation, not luxury, then choose the North Sea resort of Rüstersiel".
