Tips

  • Maleens Knoll or Magdalenenspitze is 16.6 m above sea level. NHN high dune in Sankt Peter-Ording in Schleswig-Holstein. It is considered to be the highest natural elevation in the municipality. A wooden viewing platform was built at the highest point, which was renewed and raised in autumn 2015. It offers a panoramic view of the dune landscape in the vicinity, the buildings of St. Peter Bad and the area around the beach bridge and the North Sea in the southwest. Some other visual targets can be seen between the treetops of the surrounding pine forest.

The name of the dune goes back to a legendary story. According to this, a young girl by the name of Maleen is said to have looked here every day for her fiancé, who had gone to sea. She had promised to wait for him. To make the most of the time, she always took her spinning wheel with her. Every evening she lit a light so that her fiancé could find her way to her at night. The residents of the area got used to this sight. When after years the light went out, they looked in fright and found Maleen dead on the dune by her spinning wheel. Weeks later, a dead sailor was found on the beach wearing the same ring as Maleen.
