Hiking Highlight
This Highlight is in a protected area
Please check local regulations for: Biotop Kalterer See - Biotopo Lago di Caldaro
Lake Kaltern contains the largest preserved wetland area between the Po Valley and the main Alpine ridge, which was also included in the European network of "Natura 2002" protected areas. The reed area at the south end of Lake Caldaro is a nature reserve. It is a nesting place for countless and rare birds as well as marsh animals. Scientists have found more than 100 species of birds here. There are, for example, water pipit, reed bunting, bittern, reed warbler, wryneck, Ortolan, linnet, yellow wagtail, long-tailed warbler, tern, black-headed gull, water rail, marsh harrier, hoopoe, tree hawk and many others. This reed area is the only larger habitat of this species between the Reschenpass and Verona and lies at the fork of the main bird flight lines. This is why fish and purple herons, ruffs, snipe, lapwings, black swans, osprey, cranes, cormorants and white storks appear again and again. You can watch the animals from a lookout tower, where most of the birds are described. You can hike through the biotope and admire frogs and amphibians via the nature adventure trail. In the summer of 2010, the nature adventure trail on Lake Kaltern was expanded and extended. Especially recommended for families with children.

The Kalterer See is located at 216 m above sea level and is the warmest alpine lake ever. The hamlet Klughammer, one of the sunniest places, is located directly on the north shore. The south end is clear, here is the well-known biotope, which offers over 100 species of birds a home or a stopover on the way to the south. Also a campsite can be found there.
The bathing takes place mainly on the east and west banks, dogs are not allowed at the lake. Well maintained bathing establishments with sunbathing areas, a new swimming pool and restaurants are available as well as parking lots and boat rentals. The bathing season - between the beginning of May and September - attracts numerous water sports enthusiasts from near and far, who also use the "Ora", the afternoon wind that winds around Lake Garda around 1:00 pm, for windsurfing and sailing. Motorboats and outboard motors are not allowed on the lake.

You don't come directly to the lake on the lake trail, but you always have a look at it, you dive directly into the biotope on wooden sticks, you are supported by display boards, there is also a high stand to watch the birds in the wetland.
