The reed area at the southern end of Lake Kaltern is a nature reserve. It is a nesting place for countless rare birds and marsh animals. Scientists have identified over 100 species of birds here. There are also, for example, water pipits, reed buntings, bitterns, reed warblers, wrynecks, ortolan buntings, linnets, yellow wagtails, leaf warblers, terns, black-headed gulls, water rails, marsh harriers, hoopoes, hobby and many others.
