On the northern slope of the Arber, in the middle of a 403 hectare nature reserve, lies the Kleine Arbersee - a moraine lake from the last Ice Age.
Today its area is 8.56 hectares and its maximum depth is 12 m. The lake only got its size after 1885, when it was dammed by about 1 m for timber drift purposes. As a result of the damming, the moor cover was detached from the current lake floor and the three floating islands were created.
As the name suggests, these are without a fixed connection to the subsurface and rise and fall with the fluctuations in the water level. The geologically unique floating islands in the Kleiner Arbersee can change their position depending on the wind direction.

On the moor cover of the floating islands, which are between 1.5 m and 3.5 m thick, there is a characteristic moor flora with rare and endangered plant species, e.g. B. Scheidiges cottongrass, round-leaved sundew, cranberry, rosemary heather and marsh bear moss.

Beautiful section on the south side of the small Arbersee, small rivulets can be seen on the rock walls and there is always a beautiful view over the lake.
