The Munich Frauenkirche (officially: Cathedral of Our Lady, Liebfrauendom for short) at Frauenplatz 1 was built from 1468 to 1488 by Jörg von Halspach, known as “the Ganghofer”. With its two brick towers, the Frauenkirche is one of the most famous, if not the most famous, landmarks in Munich.

The construction period of the Frauenkirche was extremely short, only 20 years. The builders were the Munich Council in collaboration with Duke Albrecht IV and the bishop at the time. A legend says that at the time of planning, the Ganghofer made a pact with the devil to build a church without windows. The builder outwitted the devil by placing the pillars in the axes of the windows. The devil was so angry that he left his footprint at the entrance to the church.

The northern tower was later chosen as the zero point of the Bavarian state survey. From there, a triangular network of fixed points (trigonometric points) covered the whole of Bavaria, including the Rhine Palatinate, which was then part of Bavaria. The baseline for all further triangles went from here to Aufkirchen. The towers are almost 100 m high (exactly: 98.57 m and 98.45 m) and are visible from afar, as the city administration in the city center does not allow buildings with a height of over 100 meters within the Middle Ring and also outside this ring since November In 2004, taller buildings were no longer allowed to be built in the city.
