As early as the Middle Ages there was a pit with a shaft at the current location of the Winkl weather shaft called "Luddelvinghe". It was one of the easternmost pits on the Rammelsberg. The name of the pit changed several times over time, for a time in the 18th century it was called Julius Winkel and the pit was Julius-Winkel-Schacht. In the second half of the 19th century, this pit and its day facilities were only referred to as the "Winkler weather pit".
