The loop is an estuary of the Baltic Sea that stretches 42 kilometers in length from Schleimünde in the east to Schleswig in the west. Due to its conditions, the loop is not a river, but a fjord. Their shape is diverse - slightly hilly landscapes alternate with rapeseed and grain fields and the approximately 151 km long shoreline is lined with extensive noors, as the bays in the region are called.
