The Saint-Pierre church in Vienne, now the Saint-Pierre archaeological museum, is one of the oldest churches in France.
Originally dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul, the old abbey was built at the end of the 5th century in a cemetery occupying the ruins of a residential area, inside the Gallo-Roman rampart. It was used as a funeral basilica, sheltering until the twelfth century the burial place of most of the bishops of Vienna like Mamert, its probable founder, who died around 475. In the sixth century, a first community of monks settled there, including the hermit Léonien would have been the abbot. It was the city's most powerful abbey in the Middle Ages. All the first bishops of Vienna buried in the abbey being considered as saints, it preserves a very important set of relics, among which is the tablecloth of the Last Supper. Competition from the mendicant orders, then the Wars of Religion, permanently weakened the abbey. The monks became canons and in 1780 obtained union with the abbey of Saint-Chef. It was removed in 1791. Transformed into a museum in 1809, it then experienced other uses until the 1860s when its restoration gave it its current appearance. In 1872, the lapidary museum moved there. The presentation of the collections has long remained almost unchanged. fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89glise_Saint-Pierre_de_Vienne_(Is%C3%A8re)
