Doddendael Castle was first mentioned in 1332. It is therefore often assumed that the Doddendael House was built around 1330 and that it was named after the bulrushes that were abundant in the marshy environment. Doddendael was described as "borch, huys ende hoff tot Ewic".

The castle has already been owned by several families, when the Van Stepraedt family bought it in 1489 for 4000 gold guilders (converted € 1920). This family holds the castle intermittently until 1743. In 1526 Doddendael is sold to Duke Charles van Gelre, who uses the castle as a fortress. The Nijmegen residents take a plunder trip to the castle by barge and set it on fire. In 1528 the Slot Doddendael family bought burnt and returned.

The recovery begins, but in 1585 the castle is occupied by the Spaniards. Prince Maurice recaptures Doddendael during the Siege of Nijmegen and sets it on fire. Only the heavy hull walls remain intact. The Van Stepraedt family is going for recovery again. The family no longer used it as a main residence from the mid-seventeenth century and, when Catholic worship was banned, made the lock cellar available as a secret church. The remains of it can still be seen.

After a thorough restoration, the current owner, Mr. H. Braam, has used Slot Doddendael as a restaurant for parties since 1977. Since April 1, 2012, his daughter Fabiënne Braam took over the operation together with her husband Jan Willem 't Hooft.
