About 2,000 years ago, the mask protected the face of a Roman soldier. About 100 years ago, the mask was dredged up in the river Waal and became the showpiece of Museum het Valkhof. Since Wednesday, April 8, the same iconic statue has been on the new island of Veur-Lent near Nijmegen, but now in giant format: 6 meters high and 5 by meters wide and weighing 3.5 tons. The statue will be handed over to Mayor Bruls later this year.

The Face of Nijmegen by the Nijmegen artist Andreas Hetfeld is a true-to-life representation of the age-old combat mask. He worked on it for two years at the shipyards in Nijmegen and Millingen aan de Rijn.
