The canal was built between 1745 and 1750 along the course of existing natural channels. In particular, the Große Stechlinsee was connected to the Nehmitzsee via the Kleiner Stechlinsee and the Gerlinsee. The one in turn with the Roofensee. The canal was 24 feet wide (about 8 m) and from 1746 supplied Berlin with wood from the Menzer Heide. As early as 1786, the maintenance of the hydraulic structures was stopped because there was no more usable wood to cut in the forests around the canal.
