If you follow the road from Taufers im Münstertal, the westernmost municipality in South Tyrol, 2 km further west, you are already entering Swiss territory and have arrived in Müstair. This place is widely known for the St. Johann Benedictine convent. The monastery itself was founded in 775 AD by none other than Charlemagne, King of the Lombards, after escaping a blizzard. In the middle of the 12th century St. Johann became a women's monastery. In 1528 the monastery church, consecrated to John the Baptist, was elevated to the parish church of Müstair.
