The former Count's Castle Veldenz was the largest castle on the Middle Moselle until it was destroyed in 1681 by the troops of the French King Louis XIV. The castle was probably built before 1130 by a knight named Emicho, from the Nahegau count family, and his son Gerlach, who also called himself "Count of Veldenz" from 1130.
