Today's church was built around 1300 by monks as a branch church of the Aland monastery and was consecrated to John the Baptist. In addition to church services, the church building also served as a refuge for severe storm surges in earlier centuries.

When the first church was built in Werden is unknown. The mound village was in the 8./9. Century as "Vurtheim" first mentioned. In the Middle Ages, Wirtum belonged to the Propstei Uttum in the Diocese of Münster.
