Girenmoos fen
The Girenmoos has been a protected area since 1995, classified as a fen of national importance. An open moor pond, rare rough meadows and a diverse flora and fauna can be found in a small area. For the people of Flawil, it is a nearby recreation area - be it for hiking, observing animals and plants, or simply to enjoy. The gray herons in particular are a magnet. In the Girenmoos, animal species that are typical of the area but are becoming increasingly rare are specifically promoted. These include, for example, the common toad, the water frog or various dragonflies. A large part of the Girenmoos is owned by the Flawil Nature Conservation Reserves Foundation. However, a protected area is not static. It changes in appearance, plants grow and spread. With extensive voluntary work, the Flawil and Surroundings Nature Conservation Association bears an important responsibility for the care of the Girenmoos. The visitor management and information concept for Girenmoos created in 2009 represents an upgrade.
