Barite, also called barite, was extracted here in the tunnel as early as 1836.
The degraded barium sulfate was mostly freed of the impurities by women for days, and sent in chunks or finely ground. Either from Partenstein train station or by ship transport on the Main from Lohr.
In 1836 an 18-year-old spar cleaner had a fatal accident when a pit collapsed and the woman fell down the shaft.
The mining of barite was stopped in 1948 when lightning struck the headframe.

Worth seeing. The mining of barite was an important economic factor in the region. Barite was mined in many villages. The Erichstollen is one of the very few relics that can still be seen today as evidence of this mining activity.
