This distinctive and fierce-looking rocky outcrop is popular with hikers and there are fantastic views across to Middlesbrough and the Tees. Many climbers tackle the twin pillars of the steeple and the needle, which you will see. On the lower ground surrounding the Wainstones there is a small collection of rocks with prehistoric carvings on them. Due to the area’s exposed location and consequent erosion, the carvings can be difficult to see, however.

The Wainstones are a stone group on the hill "Hasty Banks" and look very imposing when you walk them!
