Beautiful and picturesque. But what we now call Oijen Castle is 'only' the remains of a large and mighty castle.
What is now called Oijen Castle is actually the outer bailey of the former castle. The two low round corner towers date from the 16th century and are the oldest parts of the current complex. You can still clearly see where the now disappeared bridge once ended, exactly between the two towers.
The old castle has not completely disappeared yet. The foundations are still in the ground. The floor plan of the castle has been mapped using modern ground-penetrating radar equipment, without even having to dig a shovel.

Oijen Castle was located east of the North Brabant village of Oijen. Today, a few outbuildings remain. This castle was built in 1361 by order of Mary of Brabant, daughter of Duke John III of Brabant. It was intended as an outpost on the Maas to protect against raids by the Gelderse. When Maria died childless in 1399, the manor of Oijen and the castle fell to the Duke of Gelre.
