In the castle garden you can relax and unwind and the many seating areas invite you to linger. The English-Chinese garden with tea house and pagoda as well as numerous bridges is well worth seeing next to the Dutch-influenced castle.

The former place Nischwitz passed into the possession of Princess Henriette Catharina von Oranien-Nassau, and so the place got the name Oranienbaum. The architect Cornelis Ryckwaert began designing Oranienbaum in 1683 to create a baroque ensemble of town, palace and park.

Oranienbaum Castle is one of four castles in Germany named after the House of Orange. They were built for four sisters, daughters of the Dutch governor Friedrich Heinrich Prince of Orange-Nassau and his wife Amalie zu Solms-Braunfels, who had been married to German rulers. In addition to Oranienbaum, these are Oranienburg Palace near Berlin (for Luise Henriette von Brandenburg), Oranienstein Palace near Diez (for Albertine Agnes von Nassau-Dietz) and the - no longer existing - Oranienhof Palace near Bad Kreuznach (for Marie von Pfalz-Simmern).
