In 1879, Johann Nicol Müller converted his sawmill into a porcelain factory. After the death of the company's founder, the sons Michael and Friedrich continued to operate. As early as 1898, the company was converted into a stock corporation and incorporated into the Strupp Group, which was dominated by B. M. Strupp. In 1903 the porcelain factory was bought by Theodor Lehmann in Arzberg, who then took over the management of both factories.

Porcelain factory Schönwald AG received competition from its own family when Friedrich Müller's younger brother Eduard, long-time mayor of Schönwald, acquired a brickworks together with Adolf Müller in 1907 and opened the E. & A. Müller porcelain factory.

After the B.M. Strupp bank bought the majority stake in the E. & A. Müller porcelain factory in 1918, the two Schönwald factories were united. In the 1970s, the company merged with Hutschenreuther AG, which was renamed BHS tabletop AG in 1998 and today combines the Schönwald, Bauscher and Tafelstern brands under one roof. As early as the end of the 19th century, the Schönwald porcelain factory discovered hotel and catering porcelain as a worthwhile business area.
