If you have leisure, you should definitely drive through the park to see the Romanesque abbey church from the choir side. That is much more impressive than the baroque side of the street.

The abbey consists of very different buildings.
The church itself, mostly from the 12th century, is Romanesque.
The vault above the nave is already Gothic with a beautiful painting.
The monastery itself is built in the generous baroque style otherwise found in southern Germany.
When you enter the inner courtyard through the gate, you are surrounded by the baroque style. Through a door in front of the gate, you reach the cloister again in Romanesque forms.
Actually the most beautiful part of the monastery.
The history is as changeable as the buildings.
After secularization in 1802, the monastery was used as a work center from 1815 to 1920.
Subsequently as a prison of the Cologne judiciary.
In 1933 it was used as a concentration camp for a year and as a Gestapo prison until 1945.
Until 1949 it was used as a transit camp.
From 1980 the monastery was extensively restored and today some halls can be visited in guided tours.

The abbey was founded in 1024. From 1135 to after 1200 the Romanesque church that still exists today was built. From 1780 the spacious, four-wing baroque building was erected.
However, the abbots were not able to enjoy the splendor for long, because in 1802 the monastery was dissolved and in 1809 a beggar institution was set up by order of Emperor Napoleon.
From 1815 it became a work center.
In 1933 a concentration camp was set up in one building and from 1941 a Gestapo prison where Konrad Adenauer was imprisoned for two months.
After the war, abducted foreigners found accommodation here until they were transferred home.
From 1969 work institution again, then state hospital until 1978.
After extensive refurbishment, cultural services of the Regional Association were set up in 1985.
Some rooms such as the Emperor's Hall, the Abbot's Hall and the Chapter Hall can be visited in guided tours.
