The bronze statue created by Emil Hundrieser (cast by the bronze foundry Gladenbeck, Berlin) was erected in 1886. The inscription Doctor Martin Luther +1524+ was temporarily on the base. After the political changes of 1989, the monument received a new, more magnificent base with the new inscription God's word with us in eternity.
The monument is intended to commemorate that Martin Luther preached to a large crowd in this church on June 26, 1524. As a result of the sermon, the citizens and city council followed Luther's moderate orientation towards Protestantism.
