In the area of the city of Magdeburg, the Elbe splits into a western branch, the Stromelbe, and an eastern branch, the Alte Elbe. Both rivers flow around the Rotehorn Island and rejoin in the city area. The Alte Elbe is not navigable for shipping. It is blocked by a weir, the Cracauer Waterfall. The weir is intended to maintain a sufficient water level in the Stromelbe for shipping at low water levels. The Alte Elbe only has a stronger flow when the water level is higher.
