Hohenwehrda Castle was built around 1900/1901 by Baron Wilhelm von Kleydorff (1871–1914). His widow Lilli, née Benckiser, sold it to the Hermann Lietz School Foundation. The school was inaugurated on September 22, 1941 as a girls' school by the headmaster Alfred Andreesen, the successor of Hermann Lietz. The castle includes a 10 acre (2.5 hectare) park and an agriculture with mill operation of about 70 acres. Initially, the castle was only intended to serve as an alternative to the Bieberstein Castle, which was seized by the Nazis as a military hospital, about 30 km away. The foundation was therefore rather provisional. It was repaired from autumn 1940 to spring 1941.
