White sandstone was mined here in the past. In contrast to the better known red sandstone, this variety consists of mica and feldspar and therefore gives it the white color.

Rare white sandstone… built into the site to visit

      Translated by Google •

The mountains around Eichenberg consist of sandstone, which was deposited here in the Triassic in a flat and wide-spreading river system. The layers of the lower Buntsandstein here are about 251 million years old. Normally, the sandstone is colored brown, red-brown or red due to a wafer-thin coating of iron oxides and clay minerals on the sand grains. Most of the sand grains in sandstone are made of quartz, but depending on the origin of the sand, there may also be parts made of mica minerals and feldspar. This was the case here in Eichenberg.
