The Topplerschlösschen was built by the mayor of Rothenburg, Heinrich Toppler, in 1388 as a so-called pond house, a special type of permanent house, as a summer house. Heinrich Toppler was the most important mayor of the free imperial city of Rothenburg. From 1373 to 1407 he held this office with interruptions. In 1388 he was elected one of the four captains of the Swabian League of Towns. In 1408, after an intrigue, he was arrested as a traitor and beheaded.

Actually living in the town of Rothenburg, Toppler bought the building site for a country seat from the town and built the small palace on it between 1388 and 1440. It was not only used for representation purposes, but also to protect the mills in the Tauber valley, according to the purchase contract for the property. After its ostracism, it fell to the city of Rothenburg. It subsequently belonged to various Rothenburg families, and since 1861 it has been owned by the Boas family, who rented it out as a holiday home until the 1960s.
