The little town with the historic town center is located in a rural setting directly on the large Mittelland river Aare between the towns of Olten and Solothurn, but belongs to the Bernese Oberaargau. An old covered wooden bridge crosses the river. Wangen an der Aare was also the main town of the former administrative district of the same name.
