The Manningaburg in Pewsum, surrounded by a broad graft, was originally a chief seat of the East Frisian Manninga family, who were also lords of Lütetsburg, Jennelt and Westeel. In 1565 Hoyko Manninga sold the Niederungsburg and the Pewsumer mill to Count Edzard II of East Frisia and his wife Katharina of Sweden. [1] Only the outer bailey remains of the original castle complex.

In the castle there is a museum dealing with the history of the Frisian and Groningen castles from the simple "stone houses" of the Middle Ages to the fortresses of modern times. Another focus of the exhibition is devoted to regional church building and faith.

The Heimatverein Krummhörn regularly makes its large hall available for art exhibitions.

The Manningaburg looks very nice from the outside and in the shade of the trees you can take a break from the bike tour.

The local chiefs from the Manninga family had the castle built in the 15th century. Of the original castle complex, only the outer bailey remains.
