Riegel was already an important trade route in Roman times. From the military camp, Riegel evidently gradually developed into a small Roman town in the late 1st century AD, which functioned as the center for the Upper Rhine area on the right bank of the Rhine.
A historical circular route leads to the formerly Roman parts of Riegel. Some of the excavations can be seen (Mithras Temple), some reconstructions of Roman facilities have been made (draw wells) and sometimes the location of the Roman settlement is shown on display boards.
Excavation finds have recently also been exhibited in an archaeological museum. The techniques and customs of the Romans are also clearly presented.
In 1974 the ruins of a Roman sanctuary were uncovered in Riegel: a Mithras temple. The Roman soldiers worshiped Mithras, the god of light, who was invincible like the sun and therefore the soldiers' favorite god. At the turn of the times, the Mithras cult was so widespread in the Roman Empire that one can certainly speak of a religion. The similarities between the Mithras cult and Christianity are interesting. More about the Mithras cult ...
The first written mention of Riegel goes back to the year 762.

Drinking water wells are becoming increasingly rare. The water is particularly good on this.

Nice little town with some sights and a beautiful town center.
