The Bockwitzer See was created as a post-mining landscape near Borna south of Leipzig from the former open-cast lignite mine Borna-Ost / Bockwitz, which was flooded from 1993 to 2005 by rising groundwater. The lake was named after the devastated Gut Bockwitz.
