Sedges, swamp irises, irises and marigolds can be found in the endangered Finkenberger Bruch. Unfortunately, the wetland is drying up.The reason is the Garzweiler II opencast mine. In order to be able to extract lignite, water is constantly pumped out, which means that the groundwater level does not only sink under the wetlands. RWE Power therefore feeds water in many places in the Gladbach urban area. This area will be dredged away by 2027.From around 2080, the Niers will drain southwest of Wanlo from the remaining open-cast mine.More information at:

The renaturation of the Niers helps to preserve nature at least a little.

The path leads through the wooded piece with a lot of shade. The spills of the Niers are large, so that many trees stand in the water. Nature regulates life itself.
