During the time of the Berlin Wall, the Herthateich was in the border area. The trees were cut down and the pond was filled in so that the GDR border guards had a clear field of fire at unpopular fellow citizens.
In 1992 the pond began to be exposed again and the area on the border strip was reforested. This is how a biotope and the Kleinziethen forest came into being.
