Just after Zulzeke, the path takes you through the Spijkerbos, one of the rare forests on a southern slope of the Flemish Ardennes. After the First World War, everything here was a desolate expanse. The areas were reforested with beech trees, which hardly let in any light.
Through careful intervention, however, humans create light-rich spaces such as clearings and forest edges. Species such as the wood rose or honeysuckle feel at home here, and rare insects such as butterflies or wild bees like to meet up with flowers and flowering bushes.
