Just after Zulzeke, the path takes you through the Spijkerbos, one of the rare forests on a southern slope of the Flemish Ardennes. After the First World War, everything here was a desolate expanse. The areas were reforested with beech trees, which hardly let in any light.

Through careful intervention, however, humans create light-rich spaces such as clearings and forest edges. Species such as the wood rose or honeysuckle feel at home here, and rare insects such as butterflies or wild bees like to meet up with flowers and flowering bushes.

Fragment from our diary midweek Flemish Ardennes.

In Nukerke, situated at the foot of the Getuigenheuvels, we park our steel carriage in the shadow of the Nieuwe Kerk.

Through the glowing landscape we bridge the necessary altitude meters and briefly get to know the Spijkerbos.

The water level here is so low that we have not found any nails to hammer in later.

No time to nag…

It is a holiday and then we do not look for 'little things that are not right' in the Spijkerbos and we do not complain about them either.

The Koppenberg is something different, but more about that later.
