The Dortmund-Deusen sewage treatment plant, operated by the Emschergenossenschaft, was built as part of the reconstruction of the Emscher system. Since 1994 it has been used to clean the wastewater from Dortmund's city center, the Nordstadt, the breweries and Hoesch AG. With its striking silver digestion towers, it has a capacity for 485,000 population equivalents, with much of the wastewater coming from industry. This facility is an important contribution to improving water quality in the region and is part of the Industrial Heritage Route.
