The juniper heath can only be reached on foot. Due to the deep sandy paths, it is not advisable to arrive by bike. Cars can be parked on the wide parking strip along the L 811. From there, the juniper heath can be reached on foot in about 500m.The juniper heath in the pine forest area Klatenberge is a relic of a heath landscape that was once widespread in the Münsterland. In the 18th and 19th centuries, large parts of what is now the northern district of Warendorf were heathlands, which were unsuitable for arable use due to the nutrient-poor and dry sandy soils. Today, the entire diversity of open dune landscapes with sandy grasslands, open sandy areas, blooming heather in August, gnarled juniper bushes and distinctive old oaks is presented here on almost 4 hectares. A short stop with a picnic is worthwhile in the juniper heath: from the highest dune peak in the area there is a beautiful panoramic view of the heath landscape. There is a seating area with a table and benches. And if you want, you can take off your shoes for a moment and feel the soft sand under your feet. That is pure nature experience and enjoyment!
