The dune port serves to supply the dune island and to connect the dune island with its airfield to the main island. It is particularly exposed to waves from the south and south-westerly when the sea is rough. To reduce the wave restlessness in the port, a system of two rubble groynes was planned. Another aim of the measure was to reduce the amount of dredging in the dune harbor.

The implemented design is based on studies by the engineering office Hubertus Mohn from the 1980s and a supplementary report by Prof. Mayerle (University of Kiel). Two overlapping breakwaters were made from natural hydraulic rubble stones. The crown height is above sea level + 4.00 m, the slope was chosen to be 1: 1.5 on the inside and 1: 2 on the outside. The breakwaters are built on sink mats with rubble stones, after the pier core are the cap stones, which have a weight between 4.0 and 6.5 tons and were delivered from Norway. A total of around 70,000 t of armor stones of various sizes were used. In the area of the main access to the port, 3 guiding rods made of steel pipes (Ø 914.4 mm) were set in the course of the measure.
